Tips that can save your life on a motorcycle

Motorcycles can be fun and exciting, but they can also be deadly. If you're going out this summer in Virginia, be sure that you keep these tips in mind:

-- Get anti-lock brakes. If you lock those brakes up in a panic, you lose control of your bike. An anti-lock system may cost more, but it's worth it if it allows you to remain in control while stopping.

-- Get the right size bike. If you're a new rider, don't buy the biggest bike you can find, as it may be more than you can handle. Know your own skill level.

-- Practice your skills. You don't need to go out on the main roads until you're ready. This is especially important for new riders. Take time to ride on driveways, parking lots, deserted roads and smaller roads. Get really good at what you do before getting out into heavy traffic.

-- Be ready to bail. There are times when you just need to lay the bike down and get out of the way. Be ready to do it, as it can reduce the speed of a collision and keep you alive.

-- Invest in high quality gear. The helmet that you wear could be all that saves your life in a crash. Don't go for the cheapest one if it's not good enough. Don't buy one that's not up to code. Like the brakes, it's worth investing a bit more so that you get what you really need.

These tips may not keep you out of all wrecks. After an accident, if you're facing medical bills and other costs, you might be able to get compensation from the other driver.
