Motorcycle accident avoidance techniques

At the Dickerson & Smith Law Group, we see so many motorcycle accident injury cases that could have been avoided if the motorcyclist had reacted faster or reacted smarter. While hindsight is always 20/20 and our clients tend to have a lot of that, we hope that providing a few tips to motorcyclists in this article could help save someone from suffering a serious injury one day. This article will discuss one common motorcycle accident scenario: getting hit from behind.

These days, with so many people unlawfully texting while driving, it is not uncommon a motorcyclist to get hit from behind by an inattentive driver. If a car hits a motorcyclist like this -- even in a fender bender -- the motorcyclist could die or get seriously injured. One avoidance strategy, if there is just one car in front of you at a stoplight, is to politely pull in front of the leading car. Wave nicely while doing so, and you have just given yourself some extra protection from an inattentive texter who might accidentally ram you from behind.

Another strategy -- if no car is available for you to get in front of -- is to stop over on the side of the lane rather than in the middle. Tapping your brakes regularly will flash your break lights to alert drivers behind you. Also, watch what is happening behind you, keep your bike in gear and get ready to throttle out of the way if someone is coming up fast behind you.

Be on high alert for the potential of getting hit from behind when weather conditions create bad visibility. Also, during holiday weekends and late at night, keep a lookout for drunk drivers -- especially at times right after the bars close. Be careful to watch out behind you whenever you have to stop suddenly at a crosswalk, too, or whenever you have to slow down to avoid hitting a dog or animal in the roadway.

Hopefully, by following this advice you can avoid getting into a crash. If you are injured by an inattentive motorist, though, the Dickerson & Smith Law Group is available to speak with you about the pursuit of a personal injury claim for damages.
