3 practices to prevent motorcycle accidents

The first rule of being a motorcyclist is to avoid getting into a crash at all times. Although you can't protect yourself from the threat of motorcycle-related injuries, there are a lot of tricks and tips that Virginia motorcyclists can employ to dramatically reduce the risk of getting into a collision.

Here are three motorcycle accident prevention strategies that you might not have thought of before:

Get your mind ready: Before you get on your bike, do some pre-ride checks. Look over your bike to ensure that everything on your bike is functioning safely and appropriately. In addition, do some mental checks. If you're feeling angry or aggressive, it's best not to ride a motorcycle because it could cause you to ride faster, more aggressively or in a way that's mentally distracted. Make sure that you're focused on the task at hand before you get on your bike.

Get your body ready: Make sure that you're in good health, you don't have a cold, you don't have a fever and you're completely rested before getting on a bike. In addition, wear appropriate safety gear, like riding gloves, a helmet and an armored riding jacket.

Pretend you're invisible: Vehicle drivers are not always attentive as they should be to the traffic around them. In fact, motorcyclists are completely invisible in many cases -- and this is why cars often hit bikers out of the blue. Therefore, you should ride like you're invisible. Pretend that cars can't see you, and you'll act in a safer way that could prevent a crash.

If you get into a motorcycle crash and get hurt -- in spite of taking these and other safety precautions -- you may want talk with a lawyer about whether you can pursue a personal injury claim. If successfully navigated, a personal injury claim could bring you money to pay for your medical care and other damages.
