Can you avoid a left-turn crash on a motorcycle?

As a motorcyclist, few things make you as nervous as left-turn accidents. These happen when you do nothing but drive straight down a two-way road, with the right-of-way. Another driver, typically not seeing your motorcycle, then executes a left turn and cuts across your lane. You strike the side of the car.

It's frightening because there's very little you can do. The other driver doesn't see you, through no fault of your own. It can happen while you're driving safely at the speed limit. The turning car takes up the entire lane, so there's no way to swerve without leaving the road or entering oncoming traffic lanes.

Is there any way to avoid this type of wreck?

Experts claim there is really only one solution: You must spot the danger in advance, anticipate the wreck and take steps to avoid it before the driver makes the critical mistake.

Look for drivers that have stopped with their blinkers on. Watch for even the slightest movement of those front tires. Slow down even more and keep a close eye on them until you go by safely. Be especially wary if you have other cars in front of you and behind you; the driver may not see your small bike and may think that you are a gap in traffic.

As you can imagine, these tips can help, but this is hardly a perfect method to help you avoid all serious left-turn accidents. When another driver makes a mistake and puts you in the hospital, be sure you know how to seek compensation for your medical bills.
