The vulnerability that motorcyclists in Virginia have on their bikes can lead to severe injuries or even death. One of the most common life-threatening injuries they experience is burns. To prevent it or know what to do when you get involved in an accident, you should be aware of the common types and degrees you are likely to sustain.

Causes of burn injuries in motorcycle accidents

There are several ways in which someone can suffer a burn while in a motorcycle accident:

  • Contact with hot surfaces. This can include the ground, asphalt, and other objects heated by the sun.
  • Contact with hot engine parts. This occurs when a rider’s clothes catch fire or if they come into contact with a hot exhaust pipe.
  • Contact with flames or sparks. This can happen if a rider’s clothes catch fire after coming into contact with an open flame or a spark from the exhaust pipe.
  • Exposure to chemical substances. This can include gasoline, diesel fuel, and other hazardous materials.

Types of burns

First-degree burns. This type of burn only affects the outer layer of the skin. They can be painful and may cause redness, swelling, and blistering. First-degree burns usually heal within a week without any scarring.

Second-degree burns. These burns affect both the outer and inner layers of the skin. Besides pain, swelling, and redness, your skin may peel out. Second-degree burns often require medical treatment and can take several weeks or even months to heal properly.

Third-degree burns. This type destroys all layers of the skin, including tendons, muscles, and bones. Third-degree burns can be excruciating and may cause blackened or white skin.

Fourth-degree burns. This is the most severe type of burn people incur in motorcycle accidents. They don’t just damage the skin but also the underlying tissues such as muscles, tendons, bones, and some organs.

If you get involved in a motorcycle accident and sustain burn injuries, you should sue the at-fault party to receive compensation that you need to recover fully. If you succeed, the person responsible for the accident will pay for your motorcycle damage, medical bills, lost wages while receiving treatment, etc.
