One killed, another injured in Martinsville street race

It may be common knowledge amongst most people in Virginia that there is an inherent risk in traveling in a vehicle on the state’s roads and highways. Most do not allow this risk to deter them from doing so, however, due to an assumption that most motorists take care of avoiding any action that might increase the risk of an accident.

In many cases, that assumption proves to be true. Yet there are times when one may encounter a driver acting recklessly on the road. Sadly, the impact of such behavior is often not limited just to the person engaging in it.

Apparent street race results in fatal accident

This fact was on full display in a recent accident that occurred near Martinsville. The Martinsville Bulletin reports that a law enforcement officer working in the area witnessed the event firsthand. Two vehicles flipped and rolled several times after engaging in what appeared to be a street race (although the officer could confirm the vehicles’ speeds). Both vehicles sustained serious damage. Miraculously, the occupants of one escaped injury. However, the driver of the other died in the incident, while their passenger sustained serious injuries following an ejection from the vehicle.

Holding drivers responsible for reckless behavior

Some might argue that all involved in such an incident share in its liability. While that may hold true to a certain extent, ultimately a driver is responsible for the safety of their passengers. One who knowingly engages in reckless behavior endangers the safety of others (both in and out of their vehicle). Those who suffer from such behavior may find themselves needing financial assistance to help cover any resultant costs. Earning compensation for their expenses may be possible with the assistance of an experienced legal professional.
