How do TBIs manifest?

On Behalf of The Dickerson & Smith Law Group | Mar 12, 2021 | Car Accidents |

After getting involved in a crash, it is not uncommon to suffer from head and brain injuries. You might struggle to tell the difference between moderate to severe brain injuries at first. But identification is crucial. It allows you to seek the appropriate medical attention.

So what are the signs you should keep an eye out for? How does a traumatic brain injury typically show itself?

Physical signs of TBIs

Mayo Clinic discusses the signs of a traumatic brain injury. Symptoms often come in physical, behavioral and mental forms. In many cases, the physical signs get noticed first. For example, a victim might suffer from disordered consciousness. This can include comatose states, blacking out or passing out. They may also have uneven dilation of the pupils. In severe cases, clear fluid may drain from the ears or nose.

Beyond that, if a victim is awake, they may struggle with nausea, vomiting and dizziness. Splitting headaches that worsen over time are common. So are sensory disorders, such as ringing in the ear or numbness in the hands and feet.

Behavioral and mental manifestations

Mental and behavioral symptoms often tie together. For example, victims experience brain fog and confusion. This can lead to agitated and aggressive behavior, in which the victim lashes out at those around them. Victims may also deny that they need medical attention.

Sometimes, confusion can also manifest in severe ways. It can also combine with memory loss. For example, victims often forget where they were or what they were doing at the time of a crash. They may even forget the date, where they live, or even basic information like their own name.

Noticing any of these signs should be cause to fetch a person immediate medical attention. After all, quick action can potentially save lives.
