Burn injuries from Virginia motor vehicle accidents

On Behalf of The Dickerson & Smith Law Group | Mar 21, 2023 | Firm News |

Auto accidents can lead to distinct types of injuries, including burns. Burn injuries sustained in auto accidents can be severe and life-changing, causing physical and emotional trauma that can last a lifetime. Therefore, understanding the several types of auto accident burn injuries, Virginia motorists can sustain and how to prevent them is crucial to reducing their impact.

Types of auto accident burn injuries

There are three primary types of burn injuries motorists can sustain in motor vehicle accidents: first-degree burns, second-degree burns and third-degree burns, ascending in severity.

Thermal burns are the most common burn injury and result from contact with hot surfaces, flames, or steam. For example, thermal burns can occur when a vehicle catches fire or passengers encounter hot engine parts or fluids.

Chemical burns are caused by exposure to acids, bases, and other corrosive substances. For example, they can occur in auto accidents when passengers are exposed to chemicals from airbag deployment or vehicle fluids.

Electrical burns occur when someone touches electrical sources, such as exposed wires. For example, they can happen in auto accidents when a vehicle encounters power lines or other electrical sources.

Preventing auto accident burn injuries

While not all auto accidents burn injuries can be prevented, there are steps drivers and passengers can take to reduce their risk. Keeping a vehicle well-maintained can reduce the risk of accidents caused by engine fires or other mechanical failures. Wearing a seatbelt can prevent passengers from being ejected from the car in the event of an accident, reducing their risk of burn injuries.

Following traffic laws and driving defensively can prevent accidents that can lead to burning injuries. Furthermore, airbags can cause chemical burns if not deployed correctly. Ensuring airbags are installed and working properly can reduce this risk. Wearing protective clothing, such as leather gloves and boots, can protect passengers from burn injuries in an accident.

Seeking medical attention

If you or a loved one sustains burn injuries in an auto accident, seeking medical attention should be a top priority. Even minor burns can become infected if not treated properly, and more severe burns can lead to scarring, disfigurement, and other long-term complications. Seeking medical attention as soon as possible can reduce the risk of complications and improve the treatment outcome.

Staying safe from burn injuries

Αuto accidents can cause severe burns with lifelong consequences. Understanding the several types of burn injuries that can occur in auto accidents and taking steps to prevent them is essential to reducing their impact. Remaining aware of the dangers and being proactive about prevention can keep motorists safe from painful burn injuries.
