Many tourists do not even consider the hazards they present when they drive while on vacation. But, unfortunately, they can create a hazard for locals and other tourists alike.
You may hear locals complain about tourists driving in their area. Here are some of the reasons why.
Distracted driving
Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle accidents in the United States. People go on vacations to look at scenery and landmarks. The very things they come to see, are distractions. Mapping devices, electronics and scenery are all distracting to tourists. They are less likely to pay attention than they would in their hometown.
Stopping suddenly
As a tourist, you are in a strange area. You probably don’t know the roads or where you are going. Many tourists will stop in the middle of the road to take pictures, look at maps or turn unexpectedly.
Fatigue
After traveling a long time, you are probably fairly tired. It is always better to stop at a hotel or motel when you begin to get sleepy. If you are weary and decide to drive, it makes you a road hazard. When you drive tired, your reaction time and your decision making compromised.
Drinking and driving
Indulging on vacation is a common pastime. Unfortunately, drinking and driving are still one of the leading causes of traffic accidents. People on vacation are more likely to be drinking large amounts of alcohol. This can cause a serious road hazard should they choose to drive.
When you take a vacation make sure that you are practicing safe driving techniques and following all of the local and state laws.
